Trail length0.1 miles approx. Taking around 10 minutes.
LocationPreston Markets

As part of the 'Preston Remembers Tours & Trails', this trail follows the life and struggles of Joseph Garstang.

Joseph was a market gardener, personal trainer and conscientious objector. With strong principals, Joseph experienced a repeated cycle of imprisonment and release. This trail shows you some key sights in Joseph's history, along with his story from childhood until the end of the war.

A short but sweet trail, the distance is roughly 0.1 miles and takes around 10 minutes to complete. However, this can vary depending how long you give yourself to enjoy the history and sights this trail has to offer. You can even give yourself extra time to explore the Harris Museum.

Suitable for

The Joseph Garstang Trail is a casual and flat walk involving city centre footpaths.

Preston Remembers

Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Preston Remembers was a project that joined together activities, exhibitions, and events between 2014-2018. The events were to mark the centenary of the First World War and celebrate the lives of those who served and lived in Preston during this time.

The project was highly successful and saw the restoration of the Preston Cenotaph and uncovered many stories of the people of Preston during the First World War period.
