Ashton Freehold Connected - Sewers, Services and Supplies - Heritage Open Days 2024
Ashton Freehold Connected - Sewers, Services and Supplies - Heritage Open Days 2024

A tour of a Victorian suburb revealing the challenges of connecting water, gas and electricity supplies, sorting out sewers, setting up regular bus and tram services and staying safe on the streets.

This tour offers a very particular look at the suburb created by Ashton Freehold Land Society in 1860. For the first twenty years, until urban Ashton became part of Preston, the members and residents were responsible for organising most of the services we take for granted nowadays. From securing a gas supply to streetlighting, nothing was straightforward.

Much of the infrastructure is hidden, but there are clues if you know where to look - from drain covers to mysterious metal posts.

The tour will only briefly explain the background to the suburb. To discover the overall history of Ashton Freehold, see the Ashton Freehold - the Route to a New Suburb walk.

The walk starts from 'historic' Ashton-on-Ribble - between Waterloo Road and Tulketh Road. Participants will be notified of the exact starting point in advance.
